Factors That Affect Cleaning Frequency
Fuel type matters most: seasoned hardwood burns cleaner than softwood or unseasoned logs, which produce far more creosote. Gas fireplaces need less cleaning but still require an annual inspection for animal nests, cracked liners, and blockages.
How you burn matters too. Slow, smoldering fires (damper mostly closed) create more creosote than hot, well-ventilated fires. Chimney height, weather, and insulation also affect draft and buildup rates.
Warning Signs You Need a Cleaning Now
Call a certified sweep immediately if you notice: strong smoky odors when the fireplace is not in use, a black tar-like residue in the firebox, poor draft or smoke spilling into the room, animal noises inside the chimney, or falling debris.
